The Heidelberg Retina Tomograph (HRT III)

is a confocal scanning laser tomograph designed for the objective of noninvasive, 3-dimensional imaging of the optic nerve for the laser scanning for glaucoma. HRT is able to obtain a series of images at different depths along the optic nerve. This is why it´s often said that scanning laser tomography is an optical equivalent of a CT scan of the back of the eye. As neuropathy develops, volumetric measurements are revolutionizing the way we monitor glaucoma patients, enabling us to quantify degrees of change in the optic nerve head.

Although certain overoptimistic claims may work as a marketing strategy for new imaging technologies, the task of detecting with any accuracy an early glaucomatous optic nerve on a single appointment is an unrealistic expectation. An objective analysis of progression or change in the optic nerve head through months or even years is the most essential asset on the way towards the handling of glaucoma offered by this new clinical technice.

The HRT III, a later version of HRT, also provides a detailed quantitative description of the retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL). Measurements are obtained quickly and with little inconvenience to the patient, even when compared to eye fundus photography

Scanning laser tomography enables you to observe and analyse the optic nerve in ways not previously available.

Repeated scanning at regular time intervals (four months, six months, twelve months, the frequency being individual, depending on many different factors) is essential to verify the need of treatment, and in the affirmative case, the degree of its efficiency.

HRT is at present arguably the best available option of preventive scanning for patients at risk of developing a glaucoma.

CT is currently not covered by the policy of any health insurance company on the market. An eye-nerve scan is available at 600.- KC for both eyes.
